Three young people rescued after getting lost in North Yorkshire woods at night

THREE young people had to be rescued by emergency services last night (July 27) after getting stuck on steep ground during a night-time walk.

The trio lost their way in Hackfall Woods, near Masham, and became stranded on steep, wooded terrain in the dark - unable to find their way back to the path.

North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service were called at 10.18pm and sent a team from Bedale to the scene to help.

A spokesperson said: "Fire control located where all young persons were advised to await in situ after requesting their location via the What3Words app.

"Fire control also gave advice for them to only use one phone torch whilst awaiting the arrival of Bedale crew in hopes another persons phone could conserve battery to always maintain contact with them if needed."

Bedale firefighters reached the bottom of the slope and made contact with the group, letting them know that Swaledale Mountain Rescue Team (SMRT) had been called and were on their way.

Firefighters were unable to safely recover the group due to the steep terrain, so the mountain rescue team used a 'rope rescue system' and safely helped all three.

They were then walked back to their vehicle, uninjured.

The rescue was described by SMRT as "Another great example of multi agency working"
