Plans to build more council housing across North Yorkshire are progressing as part of a wider strategy to increase affordable homes.

North Yorkshire Council has committed to delivering 500 new council homes by 2029, with the latest proposals focusing on the purchase of 10 properties from developers in Knaresborough.

Cllr Simon Myers, executive member for housing, said: "As one of the largest councils in England, one of the biggest challenges we face is a lack of affordable housing.

"Increasing the supply of affordable housing is one of our key priorities as we work to ensure more local people and families can access homes where they want to live."

Seven of the homes would be made available to rent to families in housing need, including five four-bedroom properties and two three-bedroom homes.

The remaining three would be offered through shared ownership, which include one three-bedroom house and two four-bedroom houses.

The proposed purchase would be funded through the council’s housing revenue account, alongside Homes England grant funding and receipts from the sale of shared ownership properties.

The scheme supports North Yorkshire Council's target of building 500 new council homes by 2029.

The proposals will be considered by the council’s executive committee on Tuesday, August 4.
