New play tells extraordinary story of rock legend at York Theatre Royal

A new stage show is bringing the story of a rock and roll legend to life.

Wilko: Love and Death and Rock ’N’ Roll will be performed at York Theatre Royal from September 10 to 12, telling the story of Dr Feelgood co-founder and guitarist Wilko Johnson.

The biographical play follows Johnson’s career and life, including his work with Ian Dury and the Blockheads and his late turn to acting in Game of Thrones.

Jonathan Maitland, playwright and former BBC journalist who wrote the show, said: "Wilko’s is one of the greatest rock ‘n’ roll stories ever told and his songs are some of the greatest rock ‘n’ roll ever recorded.

"Even so, when I first read the play to him at his home in Southend five years ago, none of us could have imagined how much his story would go on to connect with audiences."

The show blends storytelling, live music, and Johnson’s own words to share his extraordinary life on stage.

Known for his signature guitar playing and on-stage presence, Johnson and Dr Feelgood were significant influences on the punk rock movement.

Tickets start from £15 and are available for any performance with York Theatre Royal’s 16-30 Membership scheme.
