People in York are being urged to check their risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

Tesco and Diabetes UK issued the warning after research highlighted low public awareness of the condition and its risk factors.

A survey found 71 per cent of UK adults have never assessed their risk, even though type 2 diabetes can lead to serious complications such as heart disease, stroke, and sight loss if left unmanaged.

Category Director for Health and Wellness at Tesco, Tom Lye, said: "Through our partnership with Diabetes UK, we’re encouraging people to use the free Know Your Risk tool to better understand their risk of type 2 diabetes."

Douglas Twenefour, head of clinical at Diabetes UK, added: "Around 6.9 million people in the UK are at increased risk of type 2 diabetes, but taking small steps can make a big difference."

He said the Know Your Risk tool is a free, online resource that takes only minutes to complete and provides personalised advice on reducing risk.

Marlene Goncalves, 40, from Shropshire, was diagnosed with prediabetes in February 2023 and has since reversed it through lifestyle changes.

Ms Goncalves said: "My advice to anyone who feels apprehensive or scared about checking their risk is simple: choose to know."
