A record-breaking adventurer is fronting a new water safety campaign in North Yorkshire.
Jasmine Harrison, from Thirsk, became the youngest woman to row solo across the Atlantic Ocean at 21 and the first woman to swim the length of the British Isles the following year.
The 27-year-old is now raising awareness about the dangers of open water, particularly the hidden risks in rivers, as part of a campaign supported by North Yorkshire Council and North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service.
Ms Harrison said: "This campaign is so important to highlight the risks of open water, particularly rivers, as people simply aren’t aware of the hidden dangers.
"If I can help to prevent more tragedies by sharing these simple hidden danger messages, it will be up there with my proudest achievements."
The campaign follows the introduction of warning signs at Richmond Falls and comes after multiple water-related deaths.
These incidents include the death of a 13-year-old girl in the River Wharfe near Burnsall during May’s heatwave.
North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service has been involved in more than 200 rescue operations in lakes and rivers in the county since the start of 2022.
